Fascinating...and disappointing. Such a popular guy, certainly bright, and I've even skimmed a few of his books and everything he says is not entirely bad. How sad when otherwise would-be Christ-followers opt out for the sake of deception.
The world has moved on, leaving these elements of the Christian Church that cannot adjust to new knowledge or a new consciousness lost in a sea of their own irrelevance.
"Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect." [Rom. 12:2]
I do not care who it is who articulates these attitudes or who tries to make them sound holy with religious jargon.
"To whom shall I speak and give warning, that they may hear? Behold, their ears are uncircumcised, they cannot listen; behold, the word of the LORD is to them an object of scorn; they take no pleasure in it." [Jer 6:10]
Surprised? No. Just anecdotal gravy that Liberal Theology encourages the dismissal of scriptural authority, whereby even rejecting the deity of Christ becomes no big deal.
I'm with PChem. Par for the course for Spong. He's always been courting heresy and this is further confirmation. Unfortunate that he takes the "you're just behind the times" tack, so prevalent in this debate. And interesting to note that he overturns any ecclesiastical authority whatsoever in order to make his point.
Absolutely. Both Spong and the Westboro freaks are out-and-out heretics. With only slight oversimplification: the former lacks law, the latter lacks grace.
As a Soldier living in a largely military town (Killeen, TX), I've seen my share of them. They've showed up at the funerals of a few of my friends; the Patriot Guard Riders (I hope I'm getting their name right; I can't remember if that's exactly it) do a great job of shielding the service from these... people...
From a friend, I heard about an Orthodox Church that they protested outside of during a Soldier's funeral who sent their deacons out to perform an Excorcism on them. :)

Who would be surprised by this from Spong.

ReplyDeleteany coincidence the fellow's named after a pithless cleaning accessory?

David,
ReplyDeleteDid you know that Alan and I had the Westborolytes harassing our otherwise friendly town a few weeks ago? An unimpressive event, I was told.
Which is worse?: heresy due to hatred, idiocy and bible-incompetence... or heresy due to worldliness, pluralism and intellectual elitism.

Nice.
ReplyDeleteMuch, much better the Orthodox than the Westboro demoniacs.
